Primers are used on metal hydroxides/oxides to improve the surface condition and to encourage bonding. Without a primer, paint applied to metals are prone to peeling.^[6]
Special kinds of primer (rust-converters) can be used to chemically convert rust to the solid metal salts.^[7] This process is not recommended for structural steel.
Painting and gluing aluminum are especially important in the aircraft industry, which uses toxic zinc chromate primers and chromating to add the necessary adhesion properties. In addition, primer provides a smooth surface for the paint to adhere to, resulting in a professional-looking finish. ^[8]

Directions For Use:-  Ensure that the surface is free from dust, dirt, loose particles and moisture. One or two coats of primer can be used, depending on requirement. For best results, it is advisable to give 8-10 hrs. drying time before application of subsequent coats. Do not over-thin. Stir well before use. Surface preparation and painting procedure: Remove grease, oil and other contaminants preferably by using Bison Degreasing Solvent. Blast clean to a minimum of Std. 21/2 Swedish standard SIS 05 5900 with a surface profile not exceeding 35-40 microns. If blasting is not practical, make full use of mechanical tools along with manual chipping and wire brushing to remove loose rust and scale to Std. 2 Swedish Standard SIS 05 5900. Excessive burnishing of steel is to be avoided.
